Where the boys are…

Stop Men at Work SignThe Mens Dept is back and it inspired a whole new build!  A big thank you to my design partner, Niki Silverweb for helping with the layout, photos and creative ideas.  We designed a modern warehouse loft space with items from TMD, The Season Story, faMESHed, Collabor88, past Fifty Linden Fridays, Lazy Sundays, Arcade & various finds along the way.

The New Year seemed like the perfect time to change things up and create a sophisticated masculine loft build.  The whole design started with the 7 Emporium Skeeball Machine that Niki purchased for me at The Men’s Dept.  I loved playing skeeball and pinball at this dive bar near our house.  This room evolved around that vision into a special urban games room/man cave/guy space.  We used the cool {iD} Warehouse 01 with its exposed beams and brick walls; our male haven was starting to take shape.  We divided the warehouse into four separate spaces: play, drink, work & sleep (repeat).   Let’ go on a tour….

As we walk up the wooden railway tie path, masculine vintage signage greets you.  Above the heavy bronze door is a tongue-in-cheek (humorous) salute to the boys, “STOP MEN AT WORK.”  Wagon wheel tires transformed into flower pots are placed next to a Vespa and red BBQ, adjacent to the vintage railway bench, barrels and working water pump.  Throw open the heavy bronze door into an inviting huge, yet cozy, man space with loads of room to move, work, play and entertain.  The ceilings soar two stories and light filters in from wood case windows, casting a warmth on the great room area.  This is a place any guy can hang and also bring his significant other.

The worn-in brown LISP Charlotte Nerd Sofa invites us to relax, eat and chill.  Strewn on the wheeled industrial table is last night’s take-out and left over popcorn from the retro machine.  A backgammon table is placed next to the totally awesome Sway’s Design Baseball Chair & Ottoman (available at TMD), perfect for relaxing after a hard game of darts and a pint from the bar.  Three playable retro games flank the brick wall: darts, foosball & skeeball.  Everywhere you go in this build there is a game, toy or something cool to do. Adding to the ambience, the brick wall is decorated with Floorplan’s retro Cheers and Lighting Bolt wall art, and Consignment’s Ticket and Platform signage from the Wanderlust Collection.

Drink:

Essential to any guy hangout is a bar and the elegant Trompe Loeil Dragon & Orchid Home Pub from faMESHed is perfect for the space below the loft.   It shows this guy has good taste and knows where to invest his money.  Trompe Loeil Billiards Dresser 08 Ball in B&W transitions us into the work/sleep space.

Work & Sleep:

A step up platform defines the space and creates a quiet area on an open platform.  The Pilot Tufted Leather Bed in camel gives insight into this gentleman’s world.  Trompe Loeil Gramercy Steamer Trunk with brass fittings is placed at the foot of the bed and accessorized with a Mason Jar Light.   Gyroscope Floor Lamp harkening from Steampunk style, flanks the bed.  Trompe gives us the Industrial Chandelier lighting hanging above the bed and sofa area.  Cleo Design’s Lodge Set with its’ comfy worn brown leather chairs and bureau, create a library space on the back wall, perfect to sit, read and contemplate.  A wooden coffee table, Scrabble game and railway bench complete the bedroom area.  On the far wall, the Standby Inc Huckleberry Desk defines a work space.  Modern abstract art hangs on the two-story wall, drawing the eye up to the weathered beam ceilings.  Heading out the private bedroom entry is a hallway decorated with an antique railroad ticket booth and more abstract art.

Loft:

There is also a loft platform that looks over the first floor and we created Niki’s art studio. Both of us are artists, but Niki is legit with a master’s degree and work hanging in major museums, so that’s her haven.  Apple Fall Artists Desk/Canvas Rack from The Season Story is everything a painter would need and love.  By locating the art studio upstairs it allows for a separate retreat to create inspiration (and make a mess).
