Sad conclusion…

This morning I’m sure you excepted to read the final conclusion to the August round of Flora’s Fashion Contest, but unfortunately I will no longer be covering that event.  It has come to my attention that the monthly styling contest is dishonest and I will not promote anything that could taint my reputation.  I am greatly sadden and very upset by the actions of the owner, Flora Raven.

This is the first time in my life (real life or second life) that I will not complete a job because of my ethical stand.  This decision could harm me grealty in the SL modeling world, however after much pondering, my readers need to know the truth, or at least my experience.

I am new to the modeling world and have very little experience.  I only enter contests for the fun and artistic expression.  I’m not motivated by money or fame.  When I entered and won the July round of FFc, I was very excited and proud of myself as a stylist on the grid.  The challenges were extremely difficult and the extra added pressure of time played its role.

Flora approached me during the contest about blogging for her.  At the time, I was concerned with conflict of interest, but Ms. Raven assured me that it wouldn’t be a problem.  After the three grueling days of styling and winning, Flora asked me a few days after the contest ended, if I would be the “official blogger” for FFc.  I was honored and wanted to expand the social media presence of FFc and my own blog.  Within two seconds of me agreeing to blog FFc, Flora asked if I “tipped FFc yet?”  This is completely embarrassing, but I had no idea what to say or do.  Her insistence and pushy behavior was bullying.  My modeling mentor was out-of-town and I had no one to ask for advice.  So, I gave Flora part of my winnings back.  I felt victimized. I never told anyone because it was so humiliating.  I hoped we could get past this and I could build my career in SL as a journalist.

Why am I telling you, my readers, this story now?  I was approached by two different people wanting to know if Flora asked me to return part of my winnings “as a tip.”  I was sure since the two people were not connected that this embarrassing incident was becoming gossip and my reputation was being soiled.  I wanted my readers to know the truth.  And, I don’t want this to happen to another unsuspecting person; model, stylist, designer or whoever.

As far as I know, all the judges, designers, sponsors, and the hostess are honest people.  At no time has anyone in the team treated the contestants or fellow team members in an unprofessional manner with the exception of Flora Raven.  On a personal level, Ms. Raven is constantly demeaning, rude and insulting to me.  Her actions are strictly self-motived.

To my readers and friends, I look forward to happier days.  I will always be truthful to you.  I will not be as trusting or foolish.  I will never promote unethical behavior.  I’m sorry I disappointed you because so many of you have styling abilities and a love for fashion.  I feel terrible that I led you down a dark alley.  I’m greatly sorry.

Final Results for Flora’s Fashion Contest

Ms. Flora Raven (Founder & CEO of Flora’s Fashion Contest) & Gloria Silverstone

This morning, July 27, 2013 three finalists competed for Flora’s Fashion Contest, a timed styling contest with a theme to be announced on the spot.  I previously won the other two rounds and moved forward to the finals.  Today’s challenge was mix and match using 3 designers, 5 different colors (black & white don’t count) in a summer outfit, while incorporating a mesh letter into the overall style in 35 minutes.  It was a killer challenge!

Rushing backstage, I re-read the challenge a few times trying to absorb the parameters.  Starting with a copper orange snake-skin swimsuit from Shiki, I added Morea‘s Jennifer bohemian maxi skirt in teals, bronzes and golds to build the outfit around the summer theme.  I wanted a beachy resort garment to wear for lunch or dinner after a dip in the pool.  To enhance the rich golden bronze teal tones, I added Finesmith Grapa jewelry in turquoise and Ricielli copper clutch.  Then I needed incorporate a large mesh letter somewhere in my look, so I scaled it down and placed it at an angle in the floral detail of the floppy natural straw hat by Avea.  At the last second, I tinted the white letter to a teal tone and prayed.  It was an exciting day and I’m very honored to be chosen for the July FFc contest.  For ladies who love to style, there is another contest in August, details here.

Flora’s Fashion Contest “Dress Up Spree”

This past weekend I challenged myself to enter a styling competition, Flora’s Fashion Contest.  FFc is a free on the spot design contest with time limits and specific themes.  I initially learned about Flora’s Fashion Contest through Lillou’s Design group.  Lillou’s is one of the many sponsors and donors of the contest.  If you would like to join the contest, please drop Floraniana (Flora Raven) a notecard.

Flora Fashion Contest “Dress Up Spree”

Each contestant must a be a female who thinks she can dress up fashionably and win this contest within a limited time. There will be 3 rounds and 3 different stylings. The challenge will be given on the spot. There will be professional judges to judge the style and fashion sense.  It’s free to participate.  We have one contest each month, about 1 to 2 hours per round.  A lot to win nothing to lose why don’t you give it a shot and choose.

Prizes For This Months Winner:

1) 1000 Lindens Cash Prize
2) Model Advanced Training Scholarship worth 3,500 Lindens Sponsored by L’Amour Management
3) Poses for the winner and picture on Ovation Poses Vendor
4) A picture on FFc Famous Wall of Fame

6) A gift card from Eden Jewelry worth 2000 Lindens
7) A gown and tiara specially made for FFc winner sponsored by Pure Poison

There are many great sponsors including: Beautiful Deluxe and Pura Vita Wedding Services, L’Amour Model Management and Productions, Ovation Poses, Lillou’s Design, Eden Jewelry, and Pure Poison.

Judging will be based on the following:

1. Style: your editing; creativity; The outfit, accessories, etc must show how well you can coordinate and match accessories, including shoes, jewelry, etc.

2. Runway: The poses you select must be fitting and complimentary for the outfit chosen and be realistic to a model. Smooth and graceful (points will be deducted for choppy poses or inappropriate poses).

3. Walk: Your walk must be suitable for a model and the outfit. Straight lines when on a straight runway.

Round One: I arrived early on Saturday morning having no clue what to expect.  The contestants lined up backstage and we walked the L’Amour Model Management runway to meet the judges; founder of Flora’s Fashion Contest Ms. Flora Raven, CEO of L’Amour Model Management & Productions Ms. Ava Jhamin, and Ms. Darlene Snowbear.  I didn’t want to peek at the exclusive Pure Poison grand prize gown and tiara, but I did and it was stunning, so if I wasn’t nervous before….I was then. The lovely and stylish judges gave us our first challenge; we had 20 minutes to mix and match two designer outfits to create a style that would be appropriate to meet our boyfriend’s parents for the first time, so we needed “to dress to impress.”

Personally, in my RL this is never a good move for me, I over think the situation and over dress.  Since, Glory is wiser and smarter than her real life counterpart, I thought do the opposite.  I planned on wearing something demure and chic.  I played with a few simple black cocktail dresses, but in SL I own very few black items (probably because I live in black in my RL).  I wanted to add a blazer, or cardigan, but unfortunately, I couldn’t get the alpha layers to work together.  I looked down at local chat and Flora say 1 minute left ladies.  I looked at Glory with three different dresses and an animal print blazer and said, “No.  Don’t overdress.  Don’t stress out.  You are meeting his friends and family and where would that normally take place…..not where an animal print blazer would be.”  I remembered I purchased a cute pink/green blazer at Drift a few Fifty Linden Fridays ago, threw on the only pair of jeans Glory owns, a lime green top from Prism, pumps & stud earrings.  Time was called and I wasn’t naked…thank God.  Somehow it all came together at the last-minute.  I didn’t have time to check my poses, so I used my preloaded huddle and prayed it would work.  When I was in line, I thought about where I would like to meet my boyfriend’s friends and family… a backyard BBQ.  Maybe it’s the American California girl in me, but I knew I could be relaxed and casual outside with beer in my hand (or in my case a glass of wine) and burger.

Anyway, back to the contest….. All the contestants walked the L’Amour Runway, around the water fountain and did 4 poses before receiving the judges feedback.  I was second and was hoping that my outfit conveyed a sweet girl next door look at a summer backyard BBQ.  They got and loved it.  Some weren’t crazy about the shoes, but other than the poor fit of freebies, I returned feeling pretty good.  After all nine ladies walked the runway (& no one fell in the fountain), we returned as a group to face the judges.  At this point, I realized there were top models from CoC, MVW and CWS in the audience, I was just hoping that everyone could relate to my point of view.  With a drum roll, Flora announced the first place contestant, Gloria Silverstone, and asked me to step forward.  I stood there for a minute and then said “wow, thank you.” I was honestly surprised because this was my first time ever embarking on a timed styling contest.  Five other ladies were selected to move forward to the second round on Sunday.

Gloria Silverstone, Round #1- July 2013

Round Two:  Bright and early Sunday morning, Glory pop over to L’Amour and waited backstage with the other ladies.  I chatted with the girls while in line when hostess, Summit Beaumont stopped in to say “hi.”  Summit was wearing a lovely red Lillou’s cocktail gown and large white and red feather hat; I suspected we might have to do a cocktail or gown round.  Once again we walked out to meet the judges and receive our second assignment. This time it was all about the holidays, with the caveat, no contestant could have the same holiday.  We rushed back stage to change into our holiday finest in 20 minutes.  I scream out, “I’ll take Valentine’s Day.”  It is no surprise to my loyal readers, that I love that darn holiday, single, or as a couple.  For this styling challenge, I had a game plan, knew what I wanted to wear and just needed to find it in the deep hell I call ‘inventory.’ (I really need to take a few days away from shopping to organize it, but alas…maybe someday).  So, the game plan was Sascha’s I Love You Pink 50’s style dress, Finesmith Love Nugget jewelry, and a cute cupcake handbag.  I had a few seconds to spare to check the poses and walks this time, and switch it up a bit.  My name was called and I walked out and hoped I didn’t land in the fountain, did my poses and told them my inspiration.  No one said anything.  “Oh no. They hated it. They don’t like pink, they are anti-Valentine’s Day and there goes my chance at the grand prize.”  To my delight, they seemed to like what I styled.  Once again they didn’t like the lavender shoes, I swear they are pink on my viewer, thought some of the prims crossed, but LOVED the cupcake bag, dress and hair.  Oh good, I thought as I returned backstage.  With only six ladies in this round, the wait was shorter and I was able to make some jokes backstage and a few new friends. 🙂  After all the ladies had a turn on the catwalk, we were asked to walk out as a group to get the results. Lined up as stylish holiday soldiers, I was selected as first in the round.  Joana Ryba (Joana Wingtip), Y L E (ylenia10), and myself will be competing next Saturday for the July finals.  I would love for you to come out and cheer me on (taxi).  I’m really excited, proud and a little nervous.  I have found that pushing yourself brings out creative juices that you keep locked away. That is probably my all time favorite thing about Second Life, you can be anything you want to be. You can try on many different masks and play various roles.

Gloria Silverstone- Round #2- July 2013

Flora’s Fashion Contest if a wonderful styling challenge that I highly encourage and recommend to any lady.  FFc allows you to stretch your imagination and opens up a world of creative opportunity.  It’s a monthly contest and more information can be found on Ms. Flora’s website.

And, a big thank you to all the sponsors, judges, and audience members.

Fashion Shows, events and more…

This weekend and the coming weeks are packed with activities other than the elite eight showdown, easter egg hunts, or in the US taxes.  SL is showcasing some top talent with fashion shows, fairs, contest and more, so mark your calendars because you don’t want to miss these events!

Saturday, March 30 at 4pm – Earth Hour Fashion Show

Hosted by The Amazing Impressions Modeling (AIM), taxi

What is one hour of light worth to you?

Earth Hour was inspired by a demonstration in Sydney, Australia on March 31, 2007, when more than 2.2 million Sydney residents and more than 2,100 businesses switched off lights and non-essential electrical appliances for one hour to make a powerful statement about the leading contributor to global warming: coal-fired electricity.

That single hour accounted for a 10.2 percent reduction in energy consumption across the city. Global icons such as the Sydney Opera House went dark, weddings were held by candlelight, and the world took notice. – What is Earth Hour?

When Dana Yotov started her small project of capturing portraits of those in support of Earth Hour, she did not know how much of an impact it would have in SecondLife (SL). Instead of an expected handful of requests from friends to join in on the pledge, she soon had dozens upon dozens of requests from all over the SL community.

One of those, was Boniefacio. He has volunteered his services in support the cause to help reduce emissions and save our Earth. The Amazing Impressions Modeling (AIM) will be hosting an Earth Hour 2013 Fashion Show on Saturday, March 30th at 4pm SLT.

Saturday, April 13 at 1pm – DEADLINE for The Fashion Teller Public Casting

The FASHION TELLER is looking for a couple of fresh faces (Male or Female) to join the family. Anyone can apply and doesn’t have to be an experienced model but He/She must be a master stylist capable of creating a look in any scenario. We totally depend on our models to creatively style and BE the character they are portraying in our books, so it is imperative that they are able to style in any fashion. We are looking for unique and creative people who would love to be part of the group for the sake of making fashion art stories. We are not an agency but a group of friends and family who are proud of the work we do to create something beautiful. This will be our only casting for 2013 and we can only hire a couple of models as we try to limit our members so we can provide work for everyone.

This is our latest book.

  1. Follow the styling challenge asked and take a picture (Professional or SnapShot) of the complete look. You must use more than 3 different designers to create your look. Please provide a style card under your flickr pic. Be creative, different and inventive. We want you to be imaginative so don’t be afraid to be dramatic and extraordinary. Think outside the box.

The year is 3045 and the world has scarce resources left. Many fashionable people have resort to using materials and items outside the box. The futuristic Kingdom of STYLISTA is inviting its citizens to attend a grand ball looking for the most stylish to rule the land.

Please style a unique and extraordinary outfit that is VIBRANT, COLORFUL and that is made of a COMBINATION of UNUSUAL ITEMS.

*Please note that by submitting a picture, you are giving us the right to use it in our blog, book or magazine.
